To plan a sound educational program, it is essential to obtain information about a student’s current ability and his or her achievement -- that is, specific content knowledge and developed skills.

The Diagnostic and Counseling Center offers students in grades 2-12:

• ability testing using the School and College Ability Test (SCAT)

• achievement testing using the Sequential Tests of Educational Progress (STEP) in reading, mathematics, and written language.

Testing is available in person at our offices in Baltimore, at a testing center near you, or by mail. SCAT and STEP tests are available on computer at over 250 testing centers nationwide. Students need not be familiar with using a computer to take the SCAT and STEP tests. All tests include a tutorial to ensure that students understand the test process and are familiar with how to use the computer equipment.

Two score reporting options are available for SCAT and STEP testing:

• A basic score report contains a summary of the results, including the number of items correct and percentile scores. The testing fee ($55 for SCAT, $60 for STEP) includes this report.

• An individualized report contains all of the information included with the basic score report, as well as recommendations for specific educational planning and placement. This report costs $200 above the SCAT and STEP testing fees.

In addition to, or in place of, an individualized report, a consultation can be scheduled to discuss testing results and educational options. A one-hour consultation costs $195.
