Meet three of the academically talented teenagers who have attended the Center for Talented Youth summer programs on scholarship: - Lynfred, of Brooklyn, N.Y., said she has always wanted to be a doctor when she grows up, but it was not until she steered her classmates through the dissection of a shark as a CTY Next Generation Venture Fund scholar that she found her true calling within the profession. “The Animal Science course really opened up the excitement of a new area of science for me,” she said, adding that she hopes to study biomedical engineering in college.
- Theresa is the fourth of five children in her Mexican-American family living in East Los Angeles. Of the three CTY courses she has taken, she says Computer Science: Introduction to Programming was the most challenging yet of the three CTY courses she has taken. “I’m not normally someone who is so technical,” she said, adding that the course has boosted her confidence in her computing skills. “If it weren’t for (the scholarship), my family could never have been able to come up with the money for me to attend,” she said.
- Jason said the three weeks he spent taking CTY courses on Dickinson College’s campus for the past two summers has revealed more opportunities for academic achievement than available in his New Jersey home town – where the middle school graduation class numbered about 100. “CTY has helped improve my critical and analytical thinking skills and developed my essay writing,” he said. Jason is considering a career in economics to bridge his interests in math and his CTY courses in Modern European History and International Politics.
