How You Can Help CTY

CTY is a self-supporting, not-for-profit unit of The Johns Hopkins University. Most of its revenue is derived from tuition and fees. Alumni, parents, foundations, and corporations have generously donated additional funding at the rate of approximately $3,000,000 per year. Most of this money has been used to expand scholarship opportunities to qualifying children from low-income families. CTY spends about $.10 to raise $1.00. It is a 501c(3) organization, making gifts tax deductible.

Major corporate and foundation donors over the past two years have been:

  •  Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO)
  •  Eisner Foundation
  •  Redback Networks
  •  Toyota Foundation
  •  AT&T Foundation
  •  Goldman Sachs Foundation
  •  Jack Kent Cooke Foundation
  •  Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation
  •  Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust
  •  Ahmanson Foundation
  •  Ceres Foundation
  •  Goldsmith Family Foundation
  •  Victoria Foundation
  •  Prudential Foundation

CTY seeks philanthropic help in three areas:

  • The Urban Initiatives, aimed at increasing outreach and financial aid to qualifying children whose families can’t afford to send them to summer programs. It costs about $4,000 to identify and recruit an outreach child and send him or her to a CTY summer program. Tuition, fees, travel, and texts come to $2,600. Endowing a scholarship costs $55,000.

  • Distance Education is a second area of need, particularly improving delivery of existing courses in writing and mathematics and developing new, additional courses so that a full range of subjects is available. Developing a new distance course costs $100,000.

  • Research on giftedness helps us better understand talented children. CTY is interested in learning more about every aspect of giftedness to help parents raise gifted children, teachers recognize them and adjust their instruction to their needs, and schools provide them with expanded opportunities.

Gifts of all size are welcomed and many come in through CTY's current giving drives in the Fall and the Spring. If you would like to discuss a particular gift to CTY, please contact:
