If you answered yes to these questions then The Center Scholars Program might be a good fit for you! What is it? The Center Scholars Program, developed by CTY and Dr. Andrew P. Feinberg's Epigenetics Center at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, particularly focuses on supporting groups that have been historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Hispanic Americans and Pacific Islanders, to explore careers in scientific research, particularly the field of genomics. This program is comprised of three parts and takes place over three consecutive summers: - Summer 1: CTY Summer Programs three week Genetics course
- Summer 2: CTY Summer Programs three week Genomics course
- Summer 3: Six Week research internship at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute
What do I get? Center Scholars participating in the CTY coursework receive scholarships which cover tuition and fees, room and board and travel to and from the CTY. Center Scholars invited to participate in the 6-week paid summer laboratory internship receive a stipend, room and board and travel to and from Baltimore. Internship dates typically coincide with CTY Summer Programs' dates. In additon, Center Scholars are eligible to attend two seminars offered by CTY's Family Academic Programs. The Pathways to College Series for 9th - 12th graders and the Science & Technology Series: Biotechnology and Bioengineering for 7th-10th graders. When do I apply? Students typically apply when they are in 9th grade. They must have completed high school biology with a B or better OR have completed CTY's Faced-paced HS Biology or CTYOnline Biology before they can complete the Genetics summer course. The Center Scholars Program does not accept applicants on a rolling basis. All applications will be considers after the January 1st deadline.
